IBM and CINECA in collaboration with IFAB are organizing two online events where participants can learn about the practical applications of quantum computers in real-life problems.

IBM Quantum Challenge Fall 2021
The event will take place from October 27 to November 5, 2021.
What will it consist of? It will be a 10-days online challenge, led by the University of Tokyo and Keio University where participants can tackle real-life problems in fields such as finance and nature. More precisely, participants will use the Qiskit Finance module from IBM, to solve portfolio optimization using a quantum computer. The tutorials to apply quantum computing in different finance problems can be found on the Qiskit website: https://qiskit.org/documentation/finance/.
On the other hand, the key step in producing effective drugs and new materials is molecular simulations. However, the calculation of accurate chemical reactions is a computationally expensive problem. Fortunately, quantum computers provide effective ways to calculate the energy of molecules. Actual cases where quantum computers were used to simulate molecules are known, such as in this article by IBM: https://www.ibm.com/blogs/research/2017/09/quantum-molecule/.
Whereas, a recent research paper, by IBM and Keio Hub researchers, published results of calculating the excited states of organic light-emitting diode materials with high accuracy. One of the tasks of the challenge will be to calculate such excited states using variational quantum algorithms.
More details on the event, such as the agenda, tutorials, and videos can be found on the IBM website.
Practical Quantum Computing School - CINECA and IFAB
CINECA is the largest Italian computing center and is a consortium of 98 universities and public institutions. Some of the main research areas of the center are High-Performance Computing, supercomputers, information systems for universities, etc.
IFAB stands for "International Foundation Big Data and Artificial Intelligence for Human Development", and was founded in the Emilia-Romagna region. Its main purpose is to bring together universities, business and manufacturing communities, research centers, in Italy and worldwide.
Together, CINECA and IFAB are organizing the first edition of Practical Quantum Computing School, which will last from November 22 to November 26, 2021. The lectures will be held exclusively online and in English. The online school will cover the practical use of new quantum computers from some of the leaders in this field, such as D-Wave, Pasqal, Amazon Web Services, ATOS, and IBM. For better results, the participants ideally should have some prior minimum knowledge of quantum computing, including quantum annealing.
The complete agenda can be found on the IFAB foundation website.
