Internships

Quantinuum, a software and hardware quantum computing company, offers internship opportunities for students currently enrolled in a Master's or PhD program. This internship position consists in experimental laboratory research with trapped ions quantum computers.

Applicants must already have a work authorization to participate in this program, and not need a visa sponsorship in the future.

You can apply for the internship position in the following link: Recruitment (adp.com)

The news that many quantum students all over the world have been looking forward to hearing: IBM has reopened its applications for the summer internship program in quantum computing! The list with all the offers for 2024 can be found in this website: Applications are now open to intern with IBM Quantum in 2024 | IBM Research Blog. Choose the opening that you prefer and don't be shy to show your best in the application process - the competition is usually tough.

Master's, PhD and Postdoc positions

*Updated

University assistant predoctoral at the University of Vienna:

Quantum Group Universität Wien is investigating some very bold questions that cut to the core of physics; more precisely, they want to know more about the foundations of quantum physics and its relations with light and gravity. Through experimental work, they want to use quantum photonics technology to bring innovations in the field of quantum machine learning, quantum computing and quantum cybersecurity. They also aim to investigate if one can scale-up multiphoton platforms by using integrated optics, quantum-dot single-photon sources and customized two-dimensional nonlinear materials. The job includes research, teaching and administration. Successful candidates must have a Master's in physics, experience in quantum photonics, quantum information theory, experimental physics, etc. The deadline for the applications is 02/13/2024. For more details visit the program's website: University assistant predoctoral (univie.ac.at).

Vienna Doctoral School in Physics, part of the University of Vienna, offers several positions in quantum computing: internships, Master's and PhD. The summer internships last 1-3 months, between 1 April to 31 October, 2024. The deadline to apply is 13 November 2023. For more information, refer to Summer Internships (univie.ac.at).

If you are interested in a funded Master's degree in quantum technologies, you can find the application form here: MSc fellowships (univie.ac.at).

There are also PhD positions available, with funding opportunities: PhD positions (univie.ac.at). These positions are opened for international students as well.

INRIA and École Normale Supérieure in Paris, France, are working with various quantum computing and algorithms projects in their team called the QAT Team (Quantum computing Architectures, Algorithms, Applications and their Theory). What I like about their projects is their very practical nature, studying topics like noise mitigation and correction (necessary to make quantum computers useful one day), quantum algorithms in industry, quantum machine learning, etc.

I suggest taking some time to check their projects and research topics: Presentation | QAT Team (inria.fr). You will find more details in the "Job Opportunities" section. Many of the projects actually are a collaboration between different European institutions, which makes this program culturally rich.

Jad C. Halimeh, a researcher at the Munich Center for Quantum Science and Technology is looking for applicants in the fields of quantum computing and quantum simulation of many-body and high-energy physics. PhD and Postdoc positions are being offered for PhD applicants interested in quantum computing, many-body physics quantum simulation, exact diagonalization, tensor networks, as well as these topics for Postdoc applicants:

- Quantum many-body dynamics

- Quantum computing and/or simulation

- Tensor networks and/or Monte Carlo

More details can be found on Halimeh's announcement on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7122570724522737664/

Finally, I would strongly suggest considering a PhD in physics in the U.S. There are many excellent American universities that offer a broad range of topics in physics (yes, quantum computing as well) for international students too. The good news is that many of them are fully funded. I must admit I am a bit biased when it comes to U.S. programs, being part of an American program myself. If you are considering the U.S. as your PhD destination, I recommend applying to NYU Physics: Physics (nyu.edu). When it comes to quantum computing, not only do we have excellent researchers, supervisors and students, but NYU has been collaborating with big companies like IBM and Qunnect: NYU Takes Quantum Step in Establishing Cutting-Edge Tech Hub in Lower Manhattan.

The staff at NYU Physics is quite supportive of their students during all their academic journey and if admitted into the program each student receives a stipend with all fees covered by the MacCracken fellowship. It will be a life changing experience. The deadline to apply is December 30, 2023.
